Akram Mohammed lived in a flat in Camden, London

Akram Mohammed died in February and an inquest at St Pancras Coroner’s Court is looking into the circumstances of his death.

Mohammed’s father has told media outlet LBC that in his opinion damp and mould contributed to Akram’s death and that repeated requests for action to tackle the issue were not sufficiently acted upon by Notting Hill Genesis (NHG).

It is understood NHG conducted a thorough mould wash of the Mohammed home, in Camden, in April 2024, following reports of damp and mould.

However, in October 2024, the month prior to Mohammed’s birth, the family reported further damp and mould issues. It is understood NHG was working to resolve these issues at the time of Mohammed’s death.

The Mohammed family, consisting of Akram’s parents and two siblings, have been moved into temporary accommodation, where the family have been living since the death. NHG is seeking to rehouse the family permanently.

NHG, in a letter to shareholders, said: “As soon as we heard about the baby’s untimely death, we arranged for his family to move into a hotel and then a serviced apartment locally to ensure his siblings remained close to their schools and the family had support from their community.

“We have also sensitively requested to meet the family, both when we were first made aware of the baby’s death and subsequently, to offer our deepest condolences in person and discuss longer-term housing options. We remain ready to assist the family further when they are ready for us to do so.”

Patrick Franco, chief executive of Notting Hill Genesis, said: “We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Akram Mohammed and extend our sincere condolences to his family, their friends and neighbours. We will continue to support the family in any way we can during this difficult time.”

Social services, hospital staff, police, the GP, the local school and Notting Hill Genesis held a Joint Agency Response meeting shortly after the death.

“We know that this is a complex situation and will continue working with the relevant authorities as they conduct their investigations,” said Franco.

“No determination has been made by the coroner as to the cause of Akram’s death, and it would therefore be inappropriate to comment further or to speculate at this time.”

The inquest has been adjourned until 15 August.
