The 85,000-home housing association today announced the appointment of Hughes as one of a trio of new board members.

Hughes served as a junior minister for housing and homelessness under Boris Johnson’s government while MP for Walsall North, before deciding not to stand for re-election in the 2024 general election.

Hughes is also project director at the Church Development Agency and is a consultant for the National Federation of Builders.

SNG also confirmed the appointment of Yvonne Arrowsmith, an experienced housing leader who has in recent years served in a number of interim chief executive roles including at Rochdale Boroughwide Housing in the aftermath of the furore over the death of toddler Awaab Ishak in one of its properties following exposure to mould.

She is interim chief executive at Eastend Homes and has served as interim boss at Saffron Housing Trust.

She has also held senior positions at a string of providers including One Housing Group, East Thames and Family Mosaic.

Marcelle Moncrieffe-Newman, chief people at St George’s University, will also join the board.

All three appointees will join the board on 1 May.
