The proposal given the green light by Cornwall Council includes 56 homes for social housing

Persimmon has obtained planning permission for 187-home development in Newquay.

The £1.19bn-turnover firm was granted permission for the proposed development on land south of the A392 by Cornwall Council last week,

Of the 187 new homes, 56 will be acquired by a local housing association for social housing.

The development proposals include a mixture of apartments and houses, ranging from one-bedroom flats to five-bedroom houses.

There will be new public spaces, play areas and a 3m-wide footpath and cycleway.

The housebuilder will contribute more than £565,000 to Cornwall Council through the Community Infrastructure Levy for local improvements.

“The application demonstrated our continued commitment to the principles of sustainable, high-quality development, delivering a wide choice of homes to meet local needs.

“We have also listened to the request for a new strategic footpath and cycle way, and we’re delighted to have gone above and beyond on this asset for the local community.”

Earlier this month Persimmon reported a collapse in pre-tax profit for the first half of its financial year. It reported pre-tax profits fell 65.7% to £151m, from £440m in the same period last year.
