Bev Craig to set up new public sector land bank in bid to remove development blockers
Greater Manchester’s new mayor, Bev Craig, has announced a plan to deliver 50,000 social, council and genuinely affordable homes across the region by 2039.
Andy Burnham’s successor is establishing a public sector land bank and has called on public bodies in Greater Manchester to carry out a public land review and identify brownfield and dormant sites that could be used for housing delivery.
The authority said it “will need to pull every lever at our disposal,” including deploying financial support from the affordable homes programme and its brownfield housing fund.
Craig said the aim is to have 10,000 of these homes completed or in the pipeline with planning permission by May 2028.
She will also set up a new board to oversee housebuilding across every borough in the region.
Places for Everyone, Greater Manchester’s joint development plan involving nine council areas, has already helped identify land supply for 78,585 new homes of all tenures up to 2030.
By 2027, the authority anticipates that the region will be building more socially rented homes than it is losing through Right to Buy.
It said the mayor will meet with the government in the coming weeks to set out a joint strategy to achieve the region’s housebuilding ambitions.
