Regeneration expert Mel Barrett takes up vacant spot at housing association trade body with immediate effect
The National Housing Federation has announced the appointment of Mel Barrett to its board with immediate effect.
Barrett, chief executive of £450 million-turnover Metropolitan Thames Valley Housing (MTVH), has joined the board of the trade body, which represents housing associations in England.
He has been appointed to fill one of the two vacant spots created by the departure from the board of Waqar Ahmed and Gail Teasdale.
Barrett took up the reins at G15 landlord MTVH last September. Before that he worked for several decades in local government, leading transformation initiatives and large-scale regeneration and development projects.
He was chief executive at Nottingham City Council and Basingstoke & Deane Borough Council and held senior regeneration posts at Hammersmith & Fulham Council and Oxford City Council.
His career spans major regeneration projects in London, including Earl’s Court and Old Oak Common.

Barrett is also a regular columnist for Housing Today.
Maggie Gallier, chair of the NHF, said: “We are delighted to welcome Mel Barrett to our board. His valuable experience providing leadership across customer facing services and local authorities will be a true asset our work as a board and greatly support members to deliver on their social purpose.”
