Position has been held for over a year by Andy Roe

The government is seeking to appoint a permanent chair for the Building Safety Regulator (BSR).

The position is currently held by Andy Roe, who was appointed to the position on an interim basis in July 2025 after retiring from his previous role as commissioner of the London Fire Brigade.

As chair of the BSR, Roe has led efforts to cut delays in building approvals that plagued the sector after the introduction of the new gateway 2 sign-off process.

The government is now seeking to make a permanent appointment, for which Roe, who was made a peer earlier this year, will be able to apply.

“As Chair, you will provide strategic direction, oversee governance and performance, and support and challenge the Chief Executive and executive team to deliver the regulator’s ambitious objectives,” it said.

“You will also act as a key ambassador for the organisation, building trusted relationships with government, industry, regulators, residents and other stakeholders while championing transparency, accountability and public confidence.”

The government is looking for a “proven senior leader” and said that experience with “public safety, housing, construction, the built environment or other safety-critical sectors would be particularly valuable”.

It said the chosen candidate will be appointed with a term of up to three years and will be expected to commit around 12 days of work per month for remuneration of £104,000 a year.

The role is advertised as “primarily virtual” but involves travel across the UK.

Applications opened earlier this month and will close on 15 September, with interviews expected to end on 13 November.
