Mike Gaskell is a well-known figure in the social housing sector in the north of England

Gaskell, who has chaired the 29,000-home landlord since 2023, is standing down with immediate effect to focus on recovering from ill health.

Gaskell, a lawyer, was a founding chair of Trafford Housing Trust from 2005 to 2009 and later chaired Leeds & Yorkshire Housing Association from 2017 to 2023. He has held board roles at Weaver Vale Housing Trust and Wakefield and District Housing.

Gaskell was a solicitor for nearly 40 years before retiring from full-time work in 2019. His work involved providing legal advice for organisations involved in social housing. He ran Trowers & Hamlins’ Manchester office from 2006 to 2019.

Jacque Allen, chief executive of YHG, said: “Mike’s leadership, expertise and wise counsel have been invaluable. His distinguished career and unwavering commitment to improving lives through housing are a legacy he can be incredibly proud of.

“On behalf of everyone here at YHG and everyone who cares about making sure more people have a safe place to call home, I want to thank Mike for his dedicated service and wish him the very best for the future.”

YHG vice-chair Bev Messinger will step up as interim chair while the Warrington-based association recruits a permanent successor.
