Outline plans submitted for mixed-use development on iconic car factory site

Wigley Group has submitted plans for a 480-home development on the site of the former Daimler car factory in Coventry.

The Midlands property company has submitted an outline application to develop the seven-acre site on the side of the Coventry canal. The brownfield site currently consists of a business park and industrial estate and has been designated for housing by Coventry City Council.

The plans currently consist of 480 homes, made up of a mix of one-, two- and three-bedroom properties along with flexible ‘work-live’ units. The precise tenure breakdown will be decided at a later stage. The site will be sold on to a developer once planning consent has been granted.

The scheme will also include direct pedestrian and cycle links through the new community to the Coventry canal, electric car charging points, and an electric bike and scooter station, as well as other flexible commercial space.

The first phase of the Daimler Wharf scheme been completed with the refurbishment of the Daimler Powerhouse building — the only part of the car factory to survive Second World War bombing — into a creative hub.

Mike Vining, land and development director at The Wigley Group said: “The wider plans that will build on phase one are for a new and vibrant neighbourhood that addresses local housing need and offers visual improvements alongside environmental benefits that will contribute to the city’s aspirations for a cleaner and greener future.”
