We need to transform the tenure into a strategic, long-term solution that sets homebuyers up for lasting success, writes Stuart Hensby

When shared ownership was established in the Housing Act 1980, its purpose was simple but noble – to help people that were experiencing housing need and couldn’t afford to buy a home outright. The model has evolved and developed in the decades that have followed, rightfully so, as the headwinds to homeownership have only grown stronger. Despite this, the principle upon which shared ownership was founded has remained the same. That is, to create an opportunity for those who otherwise could not fulfil their aspirations of owning a home.
