Firm appointed master developer of Baldock scheme by county council

Urban & Civic has been appointed by Hertfordshire County Council as master developer of a proposed 3,300-home urban extension to the town of Baldock.

The firm, which was bought out by the Wellcome Trust in January in a £506m deal, said it will now work in partnership with the council to bring forward the proposed Baldock North urban extension project.

Urban & Civic said the scheme will include 3,300 homes alongside commercial uses and associated infrastructure, including new schools and a country park, and would be designed to integrate with the existing town.

The scheme represents the firm’s 11th major commission since being set up by former Chelsfield bosses Nigel Hugill and Robin Butler in 2009. It now has more than 35,000 homes under development across schemes in high demand areas such as Alconbury Weald in Cambridgeshire (pictured), and Rugby in Warwickshire.

Nigel Hugill, chief executive of Urban & Civic, said: “We are thrilled to have been selected by Hertfordshire County Council as preferred development partner at Baldock. An urban extension of regional significance including a new country park, wrapping around a fine historic town with strong rail connections is absolutely what Urban & Civic is set up to deliver.

Scott Crudgington, director of resources at Hertfordshire County Council, said: “We want to create sustainable communities with the infrastructure to support them, where people can live, work and travel in active and sustainable ways, and we’re confident that Urban & Civic are the right partner to help us do that.”

Hugill told Housing Today last year that he intends to stay at the firm for the long term following the buyout by the Wellcome Trust.
