Matthew Bailes says his recovery from illness in tension with ‘needs of newly merged business’

SettleParadigm chief executive Matthew Bailes has “reluctantly” announced he will step down as he continues his recovery from illness.

Formerly the head of the social housing regulation at the Homes and Communities Agency, before it was established as a standalone body, Bailes joined Paradigm Housing Group in 2015.

The group completed its legal merger with Settle last October, creating a new 27,000-home provider.

In a statement today, Bailes revealed that had been recovering from an unspecified illness since last year.

“With the support of, and encouragement from the Board, I have made a good recovery from illness that started last year,” he said.

“However, it has become clear that there is a tension between the uncertainty about when I can return to full-time work, and the needs of a newly merged business undergoing a significant programme of integration and change.

“I have therefore, very reluctantly, reached the conclusion, and agreed with the Board, that it is in my best interests, and the best interests of the business, that I step down.”

Bailes will continue at the organisation until his successor is in post, though his deputy Nicola Ewen will work as acting chief executive until a permanent appointment is made.

“Matthew has been an inspirational leader and on behalf of the Board I want to express our sincere thanks for his role in helping to create a successful organisation,” SettleParadigm chair Richard Moriarty said

“Matthew’s health must be his first priority, and we wish him every success for his full recovery.”
