Body has been assessed under public bodies review programme

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has determined a full-scale review of the Regulator of Social Housing (RSH) is not necessary as it is a well-run organisation.

RSH has been assessed as part of the government’s public bodies review programme, which routinely considers the “governance, accountability, efficacy, and efficiency” of arm’s length bodies.

MHCLG said: “The review confirmed that the regulator is a well-run organisation that demonstrates no fundamental weaknesses across its operations.”

MHCLG said however it has identified key areas where it will work with RSH to strengthen it further.

It said it will work to strengthen the evidence base on the outcomes delivered by social housing regulation, particularly for residents living in social housing.

It also said it will work to ensure RSH continues to operate as efficiently as possible in future years, consider how the regulatory system may need to evolve in the future and explore opportunities for the RSH to exploit digital technologies.

The RSH sets and enforce standards for registered providers of social housing in England, covering areas including governance, financial viability, value for money, and consumer issues, including safety.
