Government forced to publish data behind £4bn fire safety repair bill claim

Claim based on desk-based survey of 2,856 buildings, with a quarter of bill to remediate social housing sector homes

The government has finally published the data behind its claim fire safety repairs to mid-rise housing blocks will cost around £4bn after being forced to by a committee of MPs.

The analysis shows the claim – repeated numerous times by housing secretary Michael Gove, but disputed by the housebuilding industry – comes from a desk-based survey of just 2,856 buildings, out of a total of as many as 82,000.
