New homes will join the area’s creative, tech and design scene
The English Cities (ECF) and Gateshead Council have signed a pre-development agreement to deliver 1,600 new homes at Baltic Quarter in Tyne and Wear.

ECF – a partnership between Homes England, L&G and Muse - will work with the local authority to shape delivery plans for Baltic Quarter, an area included in the council’s regeneration strategy launched in September 2025.
The Baltic Quarter already contains over 40 tech, digital and design companies, Gateshead College and the Northern Design Centre, which provides workspace for the North East’s creatives industries.
Alongside new homes for affordable housing and market sale, the scheme’s latest installment will also provide new public spaces alongside shops, restaurants and other leisure facilities.
Martin Gannon, leader of Gateshead Council, said: “The Baltic Quarter is a key project for the council and one we believe can have a transformational impact on the whole of the borough.
“The site offers the potential to deliver over 1,600 new homes, both affordable and for market sale, new office space for businesses, as well as high quality public spaces and improved links with nearby neighbourhoods, our town centre and the quays.
“We believe it will be a fantastic shop window for Gateshead, attracting potential future investors.”
The announcement follows the October 2025 opening of a 1000-space car park for large-scale electric vehicle charging in Gateshead.
