Gateshead Council and Metrocentre propose 20-minute ‘city within a city’

Gateshead Council and the Metrocentre shopping centre have signed a public-private partnership agreement to deliver a 4,500-home community along the River Tyne.

The Metro Riverside development would regenerate brownfield land around the Metrocentre to create a “city within a city” on the river’s south bank, according to the shopping centre.

Proposals also include retail, leisure, workspace and community uses.

The site is located three miles west of Newcastle-Gateshead city centre and has been designed by landscape architect LDA Design as a 20-minute neighbourhood.

Martin Healy, chair of Metrocentre, said: “By working in partnership with Gateshead Council and others, we can bring together long term investment, local leadership and shared purpose to create a new dense, urban community that delivers homes, jobs and opportunities, while ensuring Metrocentre continues to evolve as a major economic engine for the region for decades to come.”

Metro Riverside has previously been identified as a housing scheme by the North East Combined Authority (NECA) in its local growth plan and in the strategic place partnership created by NECA and Homes England.

Gateshead Council and the Metrocentre are aiming to deliver biodiversity net gain in the area, including green corridors and pedestrian and cycle connections between the city centres and the River Tyne.

The Metrocentre hosts 270 retail shops, over 60 hospitality venues and leisure facilities.
