Designers have not understood cladding risk, Grenfell inquiry told

Expert witness says architects had no idea that cladding panels had such dangerous components

Architects and contractors all over the world have been routinely specifying ACM cladding for years with no idea how dangerous it could be, the Grenfell Inquiry has been told.

Expert architect witness Paul Hyett, a former RIBA president and HKS principal, said a fundamental review of the industry’s understanding and use of cladding was needed.

He said it was unfair to single out Studio E for criticism on this point when the whole industry was using ACM (aluminium composite material, also referred to as ACP – aluminium composite product) as a matter of course, he said.
