Ex-MHCLG deputy director Rachael Williamson has taken on the role permanently following an interim period
The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has appointed Rachael Williamson as its permanent director of policy, communications and external affairs.
The designation follows Williamson’s tenure in the role on an interim basis since November 2024.
She joined the CIH in 2021 as head of policy and external affairs and led the industry body’s recent engagement on the 2024 general election, its advocacy for the 2025 Spending Review and the launch of its 2025 UK Housing Review.
Williamson said: “CIH’s mission – to support housing professionals to create a future in which everyone has a place to call home – is one I’m deeply passionate about.
”At a time of both challenge and opportunity for housing, I’m excited to help drive forward our policy, communications and engagement work to influence the decisions that shape our sector and champion the vital role of the housing profession.”

Her deep understanding of housing policy, clarity of purpose, and commitment to the profession have already made a real impact.”
Williamson has previously worked for the government’s Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and the cabinet office. She has also held roles as deputy head of unit for affordable housing, investment and regulation and as deputy director for leasehold and commonhold reform in the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.
