Annual Next Generation report says London-focused build to rent developer UK’s greenest for third year running

London-focused developer Telford Homes has been named the UK’s most sustainable housebuilder for the third consecutive year in the annual “Next Generation” housing rankings.

The rankings, produced by JLL in conjunction with the UK Green Building Council, Homes England and Lloyds Bank, once again saw Telford top the poll with Barratt, the UK’s biggest housebuilder by volume, in second place.

However, the rankings saw a huge leap in performance for Latimer, the development arm of housing association giant Clarion, which just outpaced Taylor Wimpey to record a third place spot in the table, having been ninth last year.

Housebuilder Hill also improved its performance, upping its ranking from 6th to 5th in study.

The Next Generation rankings assess housebuilders based initially on publicly available information, with paying “members” then able to offer further information about their sustainability credentials to score further points. Redrow was the highest ranking non-“member” this year, coming behind Hill with a score of 50 points, just ahead of Berkeley Group and Countryside.

Barratt achieved the highest score through its publicly available information alone. However, the scores overall this year were in general lower than last year, with Telford scoring 84 compared to 94, and Barratt scoring 75 compared to 89.

Hertfordshire-based Telford, which is focused largely on the build to rent sector, was bought by US-owned real estate giant CBRE in 2019, and now operates as part of CBRE’s construction subsidiary, Trammell Crow.

Robert Stone, director of technical services at Homes England, said: “Homebuilders have an important opportunity and responsibility to address the ecological and climate crises. NextGeneration is also a valuable tool that can support homebuilders to understand and improve their sustainability performance and we are delighted to continue to support such an initiative.”

John O’Dwyer, head of sustainability at Telford Homes, said: “At Telford Homes, we are committed to accomplishing our 2030 net zero roadmap ambitions and continue to refine our sustainability strategy to address evolving policy challenges. We are delighted that our efforts in this space continue to be recognised by the NextGeneration Sustainability benchmark.”
