East Devon council has unanimously awarded Persimmon Homes planning permission for 1,435 new homes to expand a new town in east Devon.

The housebuilder said it will hand 215 of the new properties at the east of Cranbrook site to a social housing provider for rent and shared ownership.

This comes after the council awarded Steve Morgan’s Carden Group a resolution to build a further 1,035 homes earlier this year.

Cranbrook’s future development plan document makes provision for about 4,170 dwellings to be built to expand the town, which people first started to occupy in 2012. The homes will be spread over four sites, known as Bluehayes, Treasbeare, Cobdens and Grange.

Persimmon will build its 1,435 homes on the Cobdens site, after having a resolution to grant outline permission agreed on Tuesday. The Carden Group’s plans are for the Treasbeare site.

Daniel Heathcote, Persimmon Homes’ South West managing director, said: “The development will provide a wide range of high-quality new homes designed for local people, especially young families and first-time buyers, who otherwise might struggle to get onto the housing ladder in Devon.

“Throughout the planning process for Cranbrook Cobdens, we have worked closely with officers and stakeholders at East Devon District Council to ensure that our homes are in keeping with – and enhance – the local area and its surroundings.”

He added: “The scheme will deliver substantial community benefit including over 400 new jobs, a range of new facilities including a new primary school, local centre, allotments, place of worship, cemetery and enhanced green space for leisure and recreation.” The application also included 10 serviced pitches for gypsies and travellers.
