Housebuilder founded by former Avant Homes boss plans development on site near former pit, in Maltby, Yorkshire.

A Sheffield-based housebuilder founded by former Avant Homes boss Mark Mitchell has submitted plans for a 185-home development in Maltby, south Yorkshire.

The development, on land near next to the former Maltby pit, will consist of two, three and four-bedroom homes, including semi-detached and detached properties as well as terraces. A quarter of the homes will be for affordable tenures.

The residential scheme in Maltby, South Yorkshire

The 39-acre site was acquired by Honey from colliery owner Hargreaves Land, which obtained outline planning permission for the scheme in November.

The development on the site of a former sports field however attracted opposition from local residents, councillors and the MP Alexander Stafford.

Mark Mitchell, chief executive at Honey said: “Our vision is to further enhance the town by providing the community with a well thought out development with homes that suit today’s lifestyles.”

If the plans are given the green light, residents are expected to move into the new properties in early 2025 and the housebuilder will invest £786,000 towards local initiatives for the community.

Since the start of the year the housebuilder secured six sites within Yorkshire, Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire to deliver 867 new homes.

Mitchell established the company with investment from Alchemy Partners and its £937m investment fund.

Mitchell left Avant less than a year after being made chief executive at the firm, and then announced he was setting up Honey in Autumn 2022.

Alchemy Partners previously worked with Mitchell at Avant, who left the firm shortly after it was taken over by Berkeley DeVeer in a deal spearheaded by controversial former Persimmon boss Jeff Fairburn.
