Homes England has given a garden village project in Darlington designed to deliver 2,000 homes £43m for vital infrastructure.

The money for the 307-acre site will help provide new highways, sustainable travel links and a public park and nature reserve.

Peter Denton, chief executive at housing agency Homes England, said: “The creation of Burtree Garden Village will play a transformative role in helping Darlington to achieve its significant growth ambitions, and we’re proud to be able to bring it a step closer to reality through funding vital infrastructure works.

“This is a great example of how we can support places with a clear vision and pipeline of delivery to unlock housing and regeneration opportunities and deliver on the government’s levelling up agenda.”

Homes England, SME developer Hellens Group and Darlington Borough Council are working together to create the new garden community, which will include affordable homes and accommodation for older people. It is also expected to create 2,750 jobs in Darlington.

The money comes from the government’s £1.3bn Land Assembly Fund, which aims to ensure homes are built where they are needed as part of the levelling up agenda.

Burtree was one of the garden communities that received a slice of £15m given by the government last year. It received £446,000 from the government’s garden communities programme.

Hellens Group obtained Garden Communities Status, which meant it could apply for funding from the government for the Burtree Garden Village development, in July 2019.
