Once full planning is given the 1,113 homes development, including 237 for social rent, will take six years to complete

A multi-million-pound redevelopment is planning to bring more than 1,000 new homes to Southwark in south London, including more than 450 homes for social rent and shared ownership.

Aviva Investors and developer Galliard Homes have received a resolution to grant planning permission for their proposals to redevelop the five-acre site of the Cantium Retail Park on the Old Kent Road.

A total of 1,113 new homes will be built, including 237 one, two and three-bedroom apartments and maisonettes for social rent and 126 one, two and three-bedroom shared ownership apartments.

The scheme will feature 750 private sale homes in a 48-storey residential tower designed by Brisac Gonzalez and a neighbouring 13-storey building designed by Alan Camp Architects. The other buildings on the site, ranging from nine to 11 storeys, were also designed by Alan Camp.

The redevelopment forms part of Southwark council’s Old Kent Road Action Plan, which is hoping the transform the road, which slices through south and south east London towards New Cross, into a new urban town centre for the borough.

Once planning is granted and work gets underway the scheme is expected to take six years to complete.

The gross development value of the project is £600m. The Old Kent Road features on the UK version of Monopoly and has a price tag of £60.
