Sunnyside Royal Hospital sits in 64 acres of land near Montrose

Work has begun to transform an old psychiatric hospital in Montrose into a £100m housing scheme.

More than 450 homes are to be built by Sunnyside Estate, a joint venture between Montrose-based contractor Pert Bruce Construction and developer FM Group, over the next 10 years.

The 64-acre site was home to the Sunnyside Royal hospital, which opened as the Montrose Lunatic Asylum in the north-east of Scotland in 1781, and which closed in 2011.

The Pert Bruce/FM Group JV bought the site from the NHS three years ago.

The scheme will feature two and three-bedroom apartments and townhouses in the existing hospital building and bespoke two, three, four and five-bedroom new-build family homes in the surrounding grounds.

The main building’s recreation hall will be converted into a new community facility and the landscaped development will be linked by a series of walks and cycle paths.

FM Group is currently developing Dulnair castle on the shores of Loch Lomond into 10 luxury flats, with more homes being built in the building’s grounds.
