Move latest by the institute to help members meet new Competence and Conduct Standard

The Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH) has announced experienced members who are required to complete a level four qualification under new requirements for social housing managers will be exempt from completing a unit on professionalism.

The CIH said today that professionals who have achieved their chartered membership through the fast-track ‘experienced professional route’ will not now have to complete the institute’s Level 4 professionalism unit in order to complete a qualification as required by the Competence and Conduct Standard.

The CIH said this “recognises the knowledge and experience chartered members have already demonstrated, enabling them to focus on the remaining units of their Level 4 or Level 5 qualification without repeating assessment”.

Under the government’s requirements, social housing managers and executives will need to complete level 4 or level 5 qualifications. The requirements come into force next year with a three-year transition period for landlords with more than 1,000 homes and four-year transition for smaller landlords.

Concerns have been raised in the sector from housing managers who have significant skills and experience but whose qualifications only partially cover the new criteria.

CIH announced last month that it is launching ‘top-up’ learning units to help professionals with partially-aligned qualifications meet the requirements without having to start a fresh qualification from scratch.
