Taylor Wimpey, Vistry and Homes England involved in 5,500-home Langley Sustainable Urban Extension

Birmingham council officers have recommended the authority approve plans for a 5,500-home development in the Sutton Coldfield area on the edge of the city.

A planning application for the Langley Sustainable Urban Extension was submitted in September by a consortium of developers comprising Taylor Wimpey, Vistry Homes, New Hall Estates, William Davis, Homes England and Ciel Property Holdings and is due to be decided at committee next Thursday.

A report by officers said the benefits of the outline plans on the former green belt site for 5,500 homes, a secondary school, primary schools and one district and two local centres outweighed the harms – and recommended it is approved next week.

The group behind the scheme – which calls itself the Langley Sutton Coldfield Consortium – are proposing to build 35% affordable housing in the development, as well as provide a “Sprint/Rapid transit service” to the scheme to ensure it is connected, and state it will be delivered to an “exemplar” standard of sustainability.

The officers’ report said construction of the scheme is expected to begin next year, if permitted, and complete in around 2040. The scheme would be expected to contribute £82m to pay for the provision of new schools and £38m for new transport links.
