Work on new accommodation building due to complete by start of 2028/29 academic year
Unite Students and Newcastle University have formed a joint venture to deliver a 2,000-bed scheme.
Unite, the largest operator of student accommodation in the UK, will act as developer and take a 51% stake in the joint venture company. Newcastle University will own the remaining 49% and contribute its vacant Castle Leazes site on a 150-year lease.

The proposed new development, ranging from four to nine storeys in height, will replace the former 1,250-bed building that was built in the 1960s and demolished last year.
The Building Safety Regulator has granted Gateway 2 approval for the scheme and work has begun on the groundwork.
The first phase of 788 beds is scheduled to be completed in time for the 2028/29 academic year with phase two, delivering 1,221 beds, ready for 2029/30.
A spokesperson for Unite said the scheme will be energy efficient, with on-site renewable energy generation and will include “enhanced community spaces”, including games rooms, study spaces and outdoor courtyards.
Joe Lister, chief executive at Unite Students, said: “By working together, we’re able to provide high-quality, affordable and sustainable homes that will enhance the residential experience for students.
”The development will also help to ease the shortage of student housing in the city and free privately rented homes for local families.“
Nick Collins, chief financial officer at Newcastle University, said: “The redevelopment of Castle Leazes is an exciting strategic investment for the University and the formation of the joint venture with Unite represents an important milestone”.
