203 new homes could be brought forward via mayor’s housebuilding programme 

Tower Hamlets Council has this week submitted planning applications for five residential schemes as part of the mayor’s accelerated housing programme.

The recent submissions total 203 new homes, with 146 (72%) for social rent across the East London borough.

Tent Street in Bethnal Green (60 homes), Gill Street in Limehouse (11) and Back Church Lane in Whitechapel (19) would LL deliver 100% social rent housing.

These proposals are in addition to three applications already submitted through the accelerated housing programme, including 55 homes at Tomlinson Close (33 for social rent), 44 homes at the Bethnal Green Professional Development Centre (24 for social rent) and five social rent units at Strout’s Place.

This brings the total submitted via the programme to eight planning applications providing 307 new dwellings.

The programme aims to deliver up to 3,400 new homes, with at least 51% affordable housing and a focus on family-sized units by targeting underused council-owned sites.

Earlier this month, Tower Hamlets Council formally opened procurement for batch one of the initiative, covering nine sites and divided into two lots. The deadline for expressions of interest is noon on 10 September 2026.
