The announcement was made at a market engagement event on Tuesday attended by contractors, consultants and industry partners.

The programme is intended to bring the east London borough’s 22,000-homes up to the reformed Decent Homes Standard and deliver building and fire safety improvements.

It forms a central part of the local authority’s 10-year capital investment strategy, which is worth a total £609m.

“We have a strong tradition of providing social housing, and this investment is key to strengthening that legacy,” said Lutfur Rahman, executive mayor of Tower Hamlets.

“At its heart, the programme is about dignity, security, and ensuring every resident has a home they can truly be proud of.

“We are continuing to build new homes to meet demand and address overcrowding, but it is equally important that we invest in the homes we already have. This programme ensures we are doing both.”

Eight contracts will be procured through the tender process, which the council said would be structured to ensure large-scale delivery and high participation from SMEs.

Two will focus on achieving and maintaining compliance with the Decent Homes Standard, two on safety improvements and four on supporting SMEs and specialist works providers.
