Appointments to Ash-Shahada board, which include ex-L&Q finance chief, intended to boost ‘capacity and capability’
The Regulator of Social Housing has made three statutory appointments to the board of a south London housing association.
Ash-Shahada Housing Association (ASHA) was subject to a regulatory notice in July 2021 which found a number of failures related to the governance and financial viability standard.
The regulator has now stepped in to appoint Martin Tiplady, the former HR director of the Metropolitan Police, Sarah Cameron, general counsel at Peabody, and Waqar Ahmed, who was previously group finance director at L&Q.
Set up as a Muslim-led housing association in 1989, ASHA has a total of 4,094 housing units under management.
This includes 128 permanent dwellings in management in Lambeth, 21 in Southwark and 5 in Croydon, as well as 51 bed spaces in two hostels.
It also provides supported exempt accommodation in Birmingham.
Jonathan Walters, deputy chief executive of the regulator, said: “Following the publication of the regulatory notice, we have been working with Ash-Shahada to ensure it addresses the weaknesses identified.
“We have made these three appointments to ensure that the Board has the capacity and capability it needs to resolve the governance failures.”
