The 62,000-home housing association, which is based in Newcastle, will shortly launch a recruitment campaign to find a successor to Henderson with an appointment expected to be announced later this year.

In a statement, the £500m-turnover provider said Henderson, who has been chief executive since September 2008, will work a “significant” notice period until the group has found a successor.

There is no immediate change to the Home Group executive team or to its day-to-day leadership and governance arrangements.

The group under Henderson’s watch has become a significant developer in the sector and is a major provider of care services. It is one of the largest providers of supported housing, working with 26,000 vulnerable people.

Henderson is chair and trustee of Whiteley Village Trust and a board member of Homes England. He is also a former board member for the National Housing Federation and former chair of homes for the North.

Henderson is a self-confessed ’petrolhead’ who races grand prix motorbikes in his spare time.

Home Group last year saw its turnover exceed £500m, placing 14th in Housing Today’s 50 Largest Housing Associations list in December.

John Cridland, chair of Home Group, said: “The board and I want to thank Mark for his outstanding leadership and for ensuring a clear, well-planned transition.

“Under his stewardship Mark has expanded Home Group’s mission to build more homes and provide more services, while creating strong relationships at the highest levels of government and within the sector. All of which have brought significant benefit to the organisation, our customers and our communities.”
