The housing association has made the pledge as part of its accreditation as a living wage employer.

The 105,000-home association, which has been paying the Living Wage Foundation rate to its own staff for more than 10 years, has made the decision to extend this to “ensure that the commitment to fair pay extends through its supply chain.”

The Living Wage Foundation’s (LWF) voluntary ‘real living wage’ is £12.60 outside London or £13.85 in London. This is higher than the government’s statutory living wage minimum of £12.21.

L&Q directly employs around 3,500 people and spends more than £1.2bn through its supply chain every year.

Tom Nicholls, executive group director for human resources at L&Q said: “We’re proud that L&Q has joined the Living Wage movement. As a not-for-profit organisation, social purpose is at the heart of everything we do - from providing quality, affordable homes to creating lasting positive change in the communities we serve.

“Our commitment to the real Living Wage extends beyond our colleagues. By working with our supply chain to ensure fair pay which meets the cost of living, we can help tackle in-work poverty and boost local economies across Greater London and Greater Manchester.”

The LWF’s real living wage rises annually based on an estimation of living costs. It is designed to give employers the confidence they are paying a wage that meets every day needs, not just the government minimum.
