Cala, the Edinburgh-based housebuilder, has bought two-thirds of a 90-acre site near the Forth Road Bridge with a view to delivering 700 homes.

The site (pictured), which sits on the western edge of South Queensferry, west of the Scottish capital, was given a “minded to grant planning permission in principle” three years ago.

Cala will submit a detailed masterplan for the development and further planning applications next year and plans to start work in 2021.

Around a quarter of the proposed homes will be affordable, in keeping with the wider Edinburgh Local Development Plan allocation HSG32.

Four acres of the land owned by Cala will be dedicated to retail and leisure uses.

Cala Homes said it would be looking to discuss its masterplan proposals with the local community in the spring of 2020.

The scheme is expected to include a “much-needed” primary school, as part of section 75 (planning) – the Scottish equivalent of a section 106 – contributions exceeding £16m.
