Alan Smith, chief executive of Believe Housing, recently told colleagues that he will leave the organisation at the end of December.

Smith became chief executive of the 18,000-home provider in April 2023, having been with the association from its establishment as County Durham Housing Group, set up in 2015 after the transfer of homes from Durham County Council.

Before becoming the chief executive, he was executive director of investment, growth and performance.

His retirement brings to an end a 42-year career in local government and housing which began at Sedgefield District Council in 1984.

Believe, which employs around 650 people, said it would begin the recruitment process for a new CEO shortly.
