Cheshire-based developer Amstone has completed the purchase of a site in Stockport on which it is drawing up plans for a 550-homes build to rent scheme.

The developer, which was behind the construction of the Clippers Quay build to rent development in Salford for Grainger (pictured), said it has appointed architect Leach Rhodes Walker to draw up plans for a “landmark” scheme mixing apartments and townhouses and including communal gardens and green space.

The firm said it will submit a planning application to Stockport council for the 1.33 ha former Sainsburys supermarket site on Warren Street later this year, and is targeting a construction start with the scheme in early 2022.

Amstone said in a statement that the site was very similar in scale to the Clippers Quay project, and that it was aiming to deliver a scheme of the same quality.

Martin Halsey, operations director at Amstone Ventures said: “Amstone has a range of build to rent developments across Greater Manchester. What these sites have in common is that they are in great locations with excellent transport links and incorporate high quality design offering city centre living to a wider demographic.”

Cllr David Meller, cabinet member for economy and regeneration at Stockport Council, said it was great to see the former Sainsbury’s site being brought back into use so quickly, with the scheme showing “the confidence so many have in our town centre.”
