Figures show increase in social rent starts and completions
Homes completed under Homes England and Greater London Authority funding programmes have reached their highest level for 11 years.
New figures today there were 43,104 homes completed in 2025/26, up 8% on the 40,071 for the previous year. The figure, which includes all social housing tenures, is the highest seen since 2014/15 when more than 58,000 homes were completed.

Starts also increased by 26% year-on-year to 42,499 to its highest level for three years. The figures show 11,364 homes were started for social rent, the highest figure since 2010/11, the final full year before the Cameron government shifted grant funding away from the tenure. Social rent completions also hit a 13-year high at 11,695.
A spokesperson for The National Housing Federation said: ”Today’s figures on new affordable housing demonstrate that government support for the social housing sector is already having a positive impact on the ground, with housing associations building the highest number of social rent homes in 13 years.
“We must build on this momentum and urge government not to delay decisions on funding through the new Social and Affordable Homes Programme.”
Amy Rees, chief executive of Homes England, said the figures were a “marker of progress” and said the increase in social rent completions reflected the agency’s focus “on delivering the tenures that matter most to those in need”.
“There is more to do, and we are clear about the challenges ahead,” she said.
“But I am proud of what the team has achieved this year and confident in our ability to continue delivering the homes that communities across England need.”
