Councils can access cash to build new homes and convert other buildings into flats

The government has opened bids for allocations from local authorities for a £174m pot of funding to provide new and refurbished accommodation for rough sleepers.

The funding, part of the government’s £433m rough sleeping accommodation programme, is intended to create 2,900 new homes by 2024.

Homes are created through the scheme by refurbishing unlettable homes, converting hotels and schools into housing along with creating new build properties.

Earlier phases on the programme have seen £350 million allocated councils and housing associaitons to provide more than 5,700 homes across England

Eddie Hughes, minister for rough sleeping, said: “The government is working closely with leading housing associations and local authorities to fast-track thousands of homes and bring rough sleepers off the streets for good.”
