At the end of last year, the government announced a consultation which could be the last ever revision to building energy regulations. It states that new buildings built to the proposed standards will meet the 2050 net zero target as the electricity grid decarbonises without any need for retrofitting. 

Rather than couching the proposals in terms of carbon emission reductions compared with previous energy regulation updates, the consultation talks about “zero carbon ready” buildings.
