‘The core skill is listening to people’: My work as a complex mental health needs lead at Advance

Outside sunset

In the latest in our Frontline Stories series, outdoorsy Catherine Convey chats with Housing Today about the strides she has taken since taking on a leadership role at the supported housing provider

After completing a law degree, Catherine Convey decided that the legal profession was not for her.

Instead, she “stumbled” into mental health, and eventually, through the doors of the housing sector. She most recently stepped up as the complex mental health needs lead for 2,300-jhome supported housing provider Advance.

“For the first time in my life, I would say I love my job,” she says smiling.

But, perhaps housing was always on the cards for Convey. She wrote her dissertation on assured leasehold tenancies, while her mother enjoyed a successful career in the sector, winning an award from the queen for her work on Birmingham’s Castle Vale regeneration.
