Holly Messenger, assistant director of growth and development at Mount Green Housing Association, talks about the need for social rented homes, crochet and the importance of outside space in new developments

Why did you choose housing as a career?

At the time I graduated, I firmly felt the repercussions of the recession and found myself a part-time temporary role as a business support assistant. My degree was centred around education studies and as part of that role I’d completed work placements supporting disadvantaged children, so I was well aware of the challenges facing communities all across the UK and the role good quality housing plays in terms of aiding social mobility.

While I started my housing career in admin, I’ve worked in a variety of roles working for local authorities and housing associations, spanning customer support, assets and finally development – where I found my real passion. I became a development officer in 2015, working my way to become the head of development and operations, before joining Mount Green in September 2020.
