The government has published its long-awaited strategy on supported housing. It is big on ambition yet pushes workload onto already-stretched local authorities, writes Charlotte Cook.
The government’s Local Supported Housing Strategies framework looks to establish a national model for how local authorities in England should strategically plan, coordinate and deliver supported housing for people who need care or support to live independently or recover from crisis.
Published on 10 February, the guidance (Local Supported Housing Strategies) follows the Supported Housing (Regulatory Oversight) Act 2023, which places a duty on local housing authorities to prepare, publish, and periodically update a local supported housing strategy.
At its core, the strategy is designed to ensure that supported housing - particularly Supported Exempt Accommodation (a housing type often occupied by the most vulnerable in society) - is planned and delivered in a way that reflects local supply, unmet need, and future demand. It also requires greater alignment with wider housing, health, social care and welfare.
