Critics argue we should only build social homes, but building ‘luxury’ homes also makes homes in the market more affordable indirectly, argues Paul Smith
A common refrain from those who oppose housebuilding is that new homes are too expensive - we should only build affordable homes for those that really need it.
We’ve seen it in the negative reactions to the “emergency measures” for development in London, which include a temporary reduction in affordable housing requirements. Similarly, Shelter, a housing charity, recently published a report arguing for a “development model that delivers genuinely affordable social homes” rather than focusing on market homes.
