Building new homes reduces housing costs, boosts productivity and generates jobs. We should let housebuilders get on and build, writes Chris Weaton
It should not be controversial to say that we need more housebuilding in London. The government suggests the capital needs 88,000 new homes per year, whilst data from residential research consultancy Molior shows that works started on only 5,500 homes in 2025.
Similarly, there is agreement that building more homes would be beneficial – the Greater London Authority’s Housing Research Note 10 indicates that delivery of new market housing reduces costs and increases availability of housing at both low and high price points. This is primarily due to the “chain of moves” effect where those that can afford it move to new, higher cost homes and through a chain of further moves, pressure is reduced on lower cost homes causing rents and prices to reduce.
Finally, it should also be uncontentious to point out that increasing taxation on an industry will reduce output.
