Decarbonisation requires a step change to meet government targets, write Mark Greatholder and Aliki Zeri

“Going further and faster: Get Britain Building” was one of the key messages of the government’s spring statement 2025. This commitment sits alongside those to reduce energy bills for consumers and increase the quality (including the energy efficiency) of new housing stock, as outlined in its Warm Homes Plan. At the same time, as part of wider efforts to achieve Net Zero by 2050, the Government continues to focus on the decarbonisation of existing public and privately owned housing stock, including by making available funding support to local authorities through the Warm Homes: Local Grant.
