Too often people talk about social housing as a last resort and as a problem to be managed. Everybody loses as a result and this must change, writes Elly Hoult
Stigma persists not because social housing fails, but because the country still talks about it as a last resort rather than a shared public good. It isn’t a side issue or a matter of hurt feelings. It shapes planning decisions, investment, and public support, and ultimately affects whether we build the homes this country needs. When social housing is talked about as a problem, the consequences are felt far beyond those who live in it.
