We need everyone to get behind a long-term investment plan, says Peabody’s Elly Hoult

Last month marked 162 years since The Times newspaper published George Peabody’s letter to his original trustees. In it he spoke about wanting to “ameliorate the condition of the poor and needy” in London and “promote their comfort and happiness”. He recognised the poverty and social injustice of those living in some of the worst housing in Europe and donated an initial £150,000 to build new homes.
