The Conservatives could win young people over with radical housing change

Making planning decisions by need rather than for a vocal minority would shore up support, if the government is brave enough

Everyone involved in housing knows that more homes need to be built and many think our planning system has not been fit for purpose for some time. Despite the failure of successive governments to deliver on the promise of new homes, it looks as though the Conservatives may finally be coming to a similar realisation. 

Last week, it was announced that No 10 had hired Jack Airey from Policy Exchange to be its housing adviser. Earlier this year, Airey co-authored the paper Rethinking the Planning System for the 21st Century, which called for the complete overhaul of our planning system and provided a swathe of radical ideas to ensure it helps to deliver for first-time buyers and young people.
