The first Budget following an election is always an important one. It signals government’s priorities for the remainder of the parliament and acts as the first litmus test of whether manifesto commitments are in fact to be delivered.

Perhaps the first thing to note was how assured Rishi Sunak was. Just weeks into the job and with coronavirus and a tumultuous economic environment to contend with, the new chancellor delivered his budget with gusto and a level of confidence that should encourage the markets …
