New towns are an opportunity to build communities that stand the test of time

As the government’s New Towns Taskforce assesses potential sites, Matt Clarke reflects on learning from Waterbeach, in Cambridgeshire, which was designated as a new town in 2018

In July, the government’s New Towns Taskforce is set to publish its recommended 12 sites for the next generation of new towns. The primary objective of the new towns programme is to create new and expanded places and thereby boost economic growth and the supply of new homes – ‘spreading opportunity and supporting strong communities’.

Work is due to begin in these locations by 2029 and already the taskforce has received more than 100 proposed locations.
