Local councillors can thrive or fall on the popularity of their parties in Westminster, despite their performance in their role
One of my biggest disappointments about local government is that perfectly good councillors lose their seats because of how popular their party is at national level (witness Lib Dem council losses from 2010-2015). This can be because of the relative popularity of the government of the day or because a particular national cause changes the way people vote at a local level.
This is something we should all be concerned about. When it comes to getting sites allocated and getting planning permission we need the best possible people around the table making the decisions, rather than those whose presence is dependent on who is popular at a national level.
