Government this week defeated the Lords’ amendment to protect leaseholders from cladding costs, now it must come up with a credible plan

Following the Grenfell tragedy and the necessity to prevent such an event ever recurring, the prime minister promised to ensure that none of the cost of remedying cladding and related defects would fall on the innocent occupiers. However, this is not how things are working out.

Over a million leaseholders find themselves liable for costs they can ill afford and measures in the Fire Safety Bill to ensure properties get checked and remediated are accused of making the situation worse.
